GLADYS ONG MEI HUI

FRONT DESK AGENT

JW MARRIOTT SINGAPORE

At Open Hotels Weekend (OHW), hotels open their doors to give jobseekers a glimpse of what it’s like to work in the Business of Happiness, through behind-the-scenes tours and on-the-spot job interviews. Gladys Ong joined the hotel industry after attending Open Hotels Weekend.

What is your name, age and current occupation? My name is Gladys, I’m currently 23 years old. I’m working as a front desk agent at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach.

How did you hear about Open Hotels Weekend? I saw a post on Instagram. I signed up for four hotels and JW Marriott was the first to reply me! So I came for the tour and interview.

How was your experience at Open Hotels Weekend? It was very interesting. During the tour, I learned a lot about the hotel industry from the facilitators. And also the history of the hotel, like how it was previously an army camp. Because the tour is done in groups, I managed to meet a few people who shared their experiences at other hotels and why they were there. These interactions gave me more insights about the industry that I didn’t know before. For example, I learned about the different operations in other hotels. The behind-the-scenes tours during Open Hotels Weekend were really enjoyable. They brought us to parts of the hotel that are not usually accessible to guests.

What were you doing before you joined the hotel industry? Before joining the hotel industry I was a pre-school teacher. I studied for a diploma in early childhood studies. After I graduated, I joined a pre-school for a year. And after that I decided to try something new. So I applied for an opening on Open Hotels Weekend, and the next thing I know, I ended up here at JW Marriott.

What made you switch to the hotel industry? I was working with kids for quite a while, but I wanted to work and interact with more people. I’m actually a pretty shy person, so I wanted an opportunity to open up and build my confidence by meeting new people. The hotel industry is perfect for this.

How has your experience in the hotel industry been so far? It’s been really fun. I got to meet a bunch of new people. I feel that I’m slightly more confident now, but I’m still working on that! It can get really interesting as well because you get to meet people from all corners of the world, with different backgrounds.

What do you enjoy about your job? I enjoy the challenges. Every day is different, and you’ll never really know what to expect.

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to join the industry or attend Open Hotels Weekend? Come with an open mind. Just give it a go and you’ll never know where you’ll end up.
